One Brother Is Rarely the Whole List

The cousin who grew up in your house. Your bhabhi, who gets a lumba beside his rakhi. The friend who has shown up like family for years. Each of them was born on a date, and each date has a number waiting here. Pick a rakhi for every wrist on your thali — a creative rakhi for cousins, friends and bhabhis too — and let each one arrive carrying its own stones.

A Rakhi That Knows Who He Is

A rakhi is the one thread a brother never picks for himself. His sister picks it. A Mulank Rakhi takes that choice seriously. Instead of grabbing whatever looks nice at the last minute, you choose by the number hidden inside his date of birth, and the rakhi arrives carrying two genuine crystals that Chaldean numerology has paired with that number for generations — a unique rakhi design built for the modern sibling, not the shopkeeper's shelf.

If someone has a birth date, they have a Mulank. And there is a rakhi here with their name quietly written into it.

Guide

How To Find Your Brother's Mulank Number (And Match His Rakhi) in 2026

Every year, sisters across India go looking for the perfect rakhi — something more unique than the usual thread, something that says a little more than "happy Raksha Bandhan." In 2026, the trend leans toward rakhis with real meaning behind the design, and numerology rakhis are leading that shift. Here is the ten-second trick behind ours.

A number chosen the day he was born, not the day you went shopping.

Step 1: Take the date, not the year

In Chaldean numerology, the Mulank (also written Moolank, root number or birth number) comes only from the day of the month someone was born on. The birth year and month matter for other calculations, but not this one.

Step 2: Add the digits until one remains

  • Born on the 7th? His Mulank is 7.
  • Born on the 25th? Add 2 and 5 to get 7.
  • Born on the 28th? Add 2 and 8 to get 10, then 1 and 0 to get 1.
  • Born on the 31st? Add 3 and 1 to get 4.

Nine numbers, nine rakhis — his has been waiting since the day he was born.

Step 3: Match the number to the rakhi

Cold Lava Studio makes nine Mulank Rakhis, one for each root number from 1 to 9, each hand-knotted in macrame with two genuine, GII-certified crystals chosen for that number's traditional planetary ruler. Use the calculator higher up this page, or the list below, and the right rakhi finds itself.

Once you know his number, you will probably start doing this for everyone — cousins, your bhabhi, the friend who is basically family. That is exactly how a numerology rakhi becomes the rakhi trend of the season instead of a one-off gift.

Rakhi Alternatives 2026: Creative Rakhis for Gen Z and Millennial Siblings

Ask any Gen Z or millennial sibling what they think of the average rakhi, and you will hear some version of the same thing: pretty for a photo, forgotten within a week. That gap is exactly why rakhi alternatives are trending in 2026 — not against tradition, but toward a version of it that survives past breakfast.

Worn well past the festival, the way a good bracelet should be.

Why a crystal rakhi works as a rakhi alternative

A Mulank Rakhi is still a rakhi — tied on the same morning, carrying the same meaning — but it is built to be worn as a bracelet long after the thread would normally come off. For a generation that treats accessories as part of their everyday aesthetic, that is the difference between a rakhi that gets photographed once and one that gets worn all year.

Not just for brothers

Rakhi has always been wider than one relationship. A unique rakhi design like this one works just as well for a cousin who grew up under the same roof, a bhabhi who deserves her own thread and lumba, or the friend who has been family in every way except paperwork. Millennials and Gen Z siblings are increasingly tying rakhi across these wider circles, and a rakhi matched to each person's own number makes every one of those threads feel individually chosen.

Every wrist on the thali, each one chosen on purpose.

An aesthetic that photographs as well as it feels

Handmade macrame in warm neutral tones, genuine stone beads instead of plastic charms — this is a rakhi designed to look as good on a feed as it does on a wrist, without losing the sentiment underneath it.

Founder's Note

The Story Behind the Mulank Rakhi

I have spent more than twenty years studying crystals and practising Chaldean numerology, and every August I watched the same scene repeat itself. Sisters buying rakhis in a hurry, choosing by colour, by sparkle, by whatever the shopkeeper pushed forward. The thread would be tied with love and forgotten within a week.

Two decades of numerology, one knot at a time.

It struck me that we already had a better way to choose sitting in plain sight. Every brother carries a number from the day he was born, and centuries of numerological tradition have already matched crystals to those numbers. So we sat down at the studio, my cofounders and I, and hand-knotted nine rakhis, each built around the stone pairing for one Mulank. Not decoration. A match.

What do the crystals quietly do?

Let me be honest with you, because honesty is how we have run this studio from day one. I will not promise that a stone will change your brother's bank balance or his blood pressure. What crystal traditions hold, and what I have observed across two decades of working with thousands of people, is quieter than that. A stone chosen with intention becomes a reminder. A brother who knows his rakhi was picked for who he is, not pulled from a pile, wears it differently. He keeps it longer.

  • Mulank 1 (the Sun): Garnet and Sunstone, vitality and self-belief
  • Mulank 2 (the Moon): Peach and White Moonstone, calm and intuition
  • Mulank 3 (Jupiter): Citrine and Smoky Quartz, brightness held steady by grounding
  • Mulank 4 (Rahu): Gold Sheen Obsidian and Black Tourmaline, protection and stability
  • Mulank 5 (Mercury): Sodalite and Aquamarine, clarity and easy communication
  • Mulank 6 (Venus): Green Onyx and Prehnite, harmony and quiet strength
  • Mulank 7 (Ketu): Amethyst and Rose Quartz, depth and gentleness
  • Mulank 8 (Saturn): Tiger's Eye and Hematite, discipline and endurance
  • Mulank 9 (Mars): Bloodstone and Red Jasper, courage and drive

Anyone with a date of birth can wear one — brothers, cousins who grew up as brothers, bhabhis, sisters tying for sisters, even the friend who has stood in like family. Raksha Bandhan has always stretched to fit the people we consider our own, and the Mulank Rakhi stretches with it.

Deep Dive

What Your Brother's Mulank Reveals — And What He Never Says

Every number has a bright side the world sees and a heavier side it keeps private. After twenty years of readings, I can tell you the second one is usually where the real brother lives.

Mulank 1 — The Sun

He leads without being asked and carries the room the moment he enters it. What he rarely says: asking for help feels like losing, so he carries everything alone and calls it strength.

Mulank 2 — The Moon

The family's quiet diplomat, smoothing arguments before they start. What he rarely says: he replays conversations late at night and swallows his own side to keep the peace.

The version of him only the people closest to him ever see.

Mulank 3 — Jupiter

Bright, funny, full of plans. What he rarely says: he starts ten things, finishes three, and privately judges himself for the seven he dropped.

Mulank 4 — Rahu

The fixed point everyone leans on. What he rarely says: he wonders if anyone notices the carrying, since being dependable often means being taken for granted.

Mulank 5 — Mercury

Quick mind, five plans running at once. What he rarely says: stillness scares him a little, and sometimes all that movement is not really going anywhere.

Steady stones, for the ones who are anything but.

Mulank 6 — Venus

The one who remembers every birthday and fixes every problem. What he rarely says: he does not know how to say no, and his own needs sit at the very bottom of his list.

Mulank 7 — Ketu

Deep, private, watching from the edge of the party. What he rarely says: when hurt, he goes quiet and calls his loneliness "needing space."

Mulank 8 — Saturn

Works when no one is watching, rewards arrive late but large. What he rarely says: whatever he builds, a quiet voice tells him it is still not enough.

Mulank 9 — Mars

First into every fight that is not his, loyal to the bone. What he rarely says: the temper everyone teases him about is usually just exhaustion wearing armour.

Questions Sisters Ask Us

I only know his birthday, not the year. Is that enough?
Yes. The Mulank comes entirely from the day of the month. The year is not needed.

He was born on the 31st. Which rakhi do I pick?
Add the digits: 3 plus 1 is 4. His rakhi is the Mulank 4, with Gold Sheen Obsidian and Black Tourmaline.

Are the crystals real?
Yes. Every stone is a genuine natural crystal, GII-certified, the same grade we use in our bracelets.

Will it reach before Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August. We ship pan-India from our Mumbai studio, and each design is made in a small batch, so ordering early is the safe road.

What happens to it after the festival?
The crystals are his to keep. Many brothers carry them in a pocket, keep them at a desk, or simply hold on to the rakhi itself as a keepsake.
